2 Questions To Ask Yourself When Determining If You Need Comprehensive Insurance Coverage On Your Car

Patrick Pearson

When you first purchased your vehicle and were still making payments, you were most likely required to have full insurance coverage on your car. Included in this coverage was comprehensive insurance to help cover damages from natural disasters, theft, and anything other than a collision.

However, if you have paid off your car, you may be wondering whether you should keep or drop it. Below are a couple of questions to ask yourself to help you determine whether or not you need to keep comprehensive insurance coverage on your car.

1. Is Your Car a High-End Model or Has It Had Expensive Upgrades That Would Result in Costly Repairs?

One question you should ask yourself when trying to decide whether to drop or keep your car's comprehensive coverage has to do with the possible cost of repairs. Is your car a high-end model that would need unique parts and specialized technicians to fix any problems? Or, have you had expensive upgrades to the engine or body that you would like to protect?

If you know that any damage from any source including falling trees or hailstorms would result in costly repairs, you should consider keeping comprehensive insurance on your car. An insurance agent can help you determine how much coverage you need for your car's specific year and model as well as any modifications.

2. Are the Areas in Which You Work and Live Prone to Natural Disasters or Do They Have High Crime Rates?

Another question to ask yourself when it comes time to decide whether you should keep your car's comprehensive coverage has to do with the areas where it will be driven. Are the areas in which you live and work prone to natural disasters? And, do either or both of the areas have a high crime rate?

If you feel that your car could be struck by a tree limb during a storm or broken into by a thief, you may want to consider keeping the coverage. You can discuss your concerns with the insurance agent who can guide you on what type of coverage you should choose.

Unless you are still making payments on your car or it is still under warranty, you will need to decide whether or not you want comprehensive coverage by considering the cost of repairs to your car. You should also think about the areas where you live and work and consider whether natural disasters or theft could cause damage to your vehicle. For more information about comprehensive coverage and to seek help determining whether you need it, speak with a car insurance agent that serves your area.
